KANSAS CITY, Mo. Brandon LaFell Jersey . -- Adam Jones turned his night around with a swing of the bat. Jones homered with one out in the 15th inning, lifting the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. Jones was hitless in six at-bats before connecting for his team-leading 12th home run -- nine of them tying the game or giving the Orioles a lead. Jones sent a 2-2 pitch from Nate Adcock (0-1), the fifth Kansas City pitcher, far over the left field wall. Jones came to the plate in the third, eighth and 12th innings with runners in scoring position. "I had three opportunities earlier with men in scoring position that I did not succeed in, which is by far the most frustrating thing for me," Jones said. "I was 0 for 3. I did not give one of my seven at-bats away. I can live with myself when I do that." Adcock hung a slider and Jones delivered. "I had some pitches to hit, just missed them, part of it, 0 for 6," Jones said. "Some people were behind me, yelling at me, Hey, come on Jones. I showed them. After I hit that, they shut up the heck up." Jones is hitting .290 with 24 RBIs and could earn a return trip to Kansas City on July 10 to for the All-Star game at Kauffman Stadium. "I know Jonesy was a little frustrated there with some previous at-bats, but he got back under control and hit a mistake," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Jonesy is having a great year. Jonesy doesnt ever give in. You always feel like if he struggles at some point someone is going to pay down the line. He doesnt forget. Its nothing personal. Its competition. Its just the way hes wound. Hes a very competitive young man." The Orioles improved to 5-0 in extra-inning road games. "Its pretty crazy what this team does," said Orioles starting pitcher Tommy Hunter. "Its 13 innings, 15 innings, 17 innings." The Orioles beat the Red Sox 9-6 in 17 innings on May 6. Kevin Gregg (1-1) pitched two hitless innings, walking one, to pick up the victory. Jim Johnson earned his 13th save. Royals right-hander Felipe Paulino, who was making only his third start after beginning the season on the disabled list with a right forearm strain, held the Orioles to five hits in seven scoreless innings. He struck out nine and walked two. "Great pitching from Paulino and great pitching from Adcock," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "They gave us an opportunity to put it away. We just couldnt do it." The Royals bullpen had a 1.04 ERA in the past seven games but relievers Jonathan Broxton and Kelvin Herrera gave up three runs on six hits in the eighth and ninth innings. Broxton was trusted with a 3-1 lead in the ninth, but blew his second seven in 10 opportunities and his first since April 11 at Oakland. Broxton gave up a solo homer to Wilson Betemit with one out and three singles to produce the tying run. J.J. Hardys two-out hit scored pinch-runner Ryan Flaherty to make it 3-all. Humberto Quinteros two-out single in the fifth scored Jeff Francoeur, who led off the inning with a double, and Alcides Escobar, who was hit by a pitch. It was Quinteros first multi-RBI game with the Royals. The Orioles cut the lead to 2-1 in the eighth, when Hardy and Nick Markakis led off the inning with doubles against rookie reliever Herrera. Alex Gordons two-out double in the eighth scored Mitch Maier to give the Royals a 3-1 advantage. Maier ran for Billy Butler, who had singled for his second hit. Orioles starter Tommy Hunter yielded two runs on seven hits in seven innings. He threw only 82 pitches and was backed by double plays in three of the first four innings. Royals second baseman Chris Getz left with a bruised left rib after a collision with Chris Davis on an infield single in the fifth inning. Irving Falu replaced Getz in the seventh inning and singled. Falu has a hit in each of his five big league games. NOTES: Royals LHP Danny Duffy, who has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament, will see Dr. Lewis Yocum on Friday in Tempe, Ariz., for a second opinion. ... The Royals have not announced who will start Friday and Sunday against Arizona. "If everything holds to form," Yost said he would probably start RHP Luis Mendoza Friday and RHP Vin Mazzaro Sunday. Mazzaro made his first start Tuesday at Texas and picked up the victory, allowing three runs in five innings. LHP Brian Matusz, who is 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA in three road appearances, will start Thursday for the Orioles. The Royals will counter with RHP Luke Hochevar, who is 0-2 with an 11.91 ERA in three home starts. ... The Orioles are 11-1 when Jones homers. ... The two-time Eastern Conference runner-ups announced they had signed three free agents -- backup big man Lavoy Allen, swingman C.CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Steve Smiths locker is filled with dozens of boxes of new cleats, photos of his family, letters from fans and a small duffel bag containing a list Smith has carried with him for more than a decade. On that list are the names of the NFLs top receivers -- guys like Jerry Rice, Tim Brown and James Lofton -- and where they stand in terms of career receiving yards. Beneath it theres a note Smith wrote to himself that reads: Where will you be at the end? Currently the Carolina received is 56 yards shy of 10,000 When Carolina plays at Tampa Bay Sunday Smith will be looking to join that list of receiving legends by becoming only the 35th player in NFL history to reach 10,000 career yards receiving. He stands 56 shy of that mark. It is a milestone not lost on Smith. "It probably means more to me that it probably should," Smith acknowledged. "Its a moment where time stops and you get to be selfish. Its not selfish where its out in the open, but its where you take a moment and, honestly ... it brings me to my knees. Its one of those where I stop and get on my knees and say thank you to God. If its His will it will happen. If not, Im OK with it." Smith has carried the list with him since joining the Carolina Panthers as a third-round draft pick from Utah in 2001, an ever-present challenge to himself and a reminder, lest he forget, of the goals he set as a rookie. From time to time he still brings it out. During his 11 NFL seasons, Smith has reached a number of personal milestones. He holds just about every Panthers franchise receiving record including most receptions, touchdowns and 100-yard games. But Smith said the milestone hes approaching this weekend means more to him than any of those others combined. Smith said no matter how much hes tried to mature as a person off the field, there will always be some wholl remember him for altercations off the field that have resulted in some negative press. "You know, it doesnt matter how many articles are written about me -- about how Im a bad character guy, or erratic or moody -- no matter how many negative things are written, the power of public opinion doesnt win on this one," Smith said. "This is a stat that Ive earned, with the help of a lot of other people, that cant be taken away. "Its a milestone that I would say really counts. It really matters." Smith remains fiercely competitive and proud. At times, that has got the best of him. For good or bad, he has a reputation that precedes him. Just ask Cam Newton. The teams rookie quarterback said when he was at the Scouting Combine he was peppered with questions about playing with Smith. And, quite frankly, he was a little scared. "I was thinking Steve Smith was the biggest monster," Newton said. "Im thinking Steve was a person who gets on everybodys nerves. So I have this image of him in my head -- that hes not a team player, hes a boneheaad and he wont work hard.Tom Brady Patriots Jersey. All of this is in the back of my mind." Then Newton got drafted by the Panthers and had a chance to meet Smith. He found him completely different than what he expected. "I met him and sitting there thinking this guy must be pulling my cord, because Ive heard so much about he may go off, whatever," Newton said. "But Steve has been unbelievable. Not just him but Jordan Gross, guys who have been established in this league for a long time. They have opened up and made it blunt and clear that theyre here for me and if I have any problems, on or off the field, theyre willing to help." And yet its that feisty, ferocious attitude that has gotten Smith to the brink of 10,000 career yards. At five foot nine and 186 pounds and growing up in inner city Los Angeles Smith had no choice but to grow up tough. Gunshots were a common background noise where he lived. So sure, he had an attitude. He still remembers being in high school and one of his coaches looking at him and saying, "If youre going to have the attitude well just replace you because there are a number of kids out there that are bigger and faster." Under his breath, Smith mumbled, "Well, I not going to give you that opportunity." And he never has. Smith went to a junior college in Santa Monica before transferring to Utah where his career really took off. He still makes it back to his old neighbourhood from time to time. It serves as a reminder of how far hes come, not just as a football player but as a person. "To me its so much bigger than the paycheque, so much bigger than being on TV," Smith said of his personal success. When he was a kid, Smith said hed go to Fox Hills Mall in Los Angeles on Saturday nights to hang out with friends and meet girls. He went back to the mall in 2004 after the Panthers reached the Super Bowl. "They have a few Foot Lockers there and I remember walking back in there and they had four of my jerseys on the rack," Smith said. "Thats kind of when I knew I had made it." Now the only question left is the one Smith posed to himself so many years ago -- where will you be at the end? Its hard to say, but at 32 hes showing no signs of slowing down. Hes still as fast, quick and dangerous as ever. He has 22 receptions this season of 20 yards or more. After enduring two years of inconsistent quarterback play in John Foxs run-first offence, Smith is enjoying a renaissance of sorts in a new offence featuring a downfield passing game led by the strong-armed Newton. Smith leads the NFC with 1,060 yards receiving. The motivation? Well, thats never left, just like the list in his duffel bag. If he can reach 10,000 yards, Smith said hell turn his attention to even bigger goals. "My ultimate goal since Ive been in the league was to win a Super Bowl and be in the Hall of Fame," Smith said. "Thats what I want." cheap jerseys cheap jerseys from china ' ' '
