Pasquale, getting his first start of the season for the IceCaps, made an impressive season debut. "I was a little nervous, I mean its the first game of the year, but I definitely want that goal back," said Pasquale. The first period featured eight penalties, four for each team. The IceCaps seized the game in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals. John Albert got it started with one-timed a slap shot from Garth Murray to tie the score and Holzapfel potted home a rebound on the power play to make it a 2-1 for the IceCaps at 6:33. Jason King also added a power-play goal six minutes later, diving to smack a puck into the net following a few awkward bounces. St. Johns outshot the Pirates 18-5 in the second period. The IceCaps continued to pressure in the third. Brett Festerling scored his first goal for St. Johns with a top-shelf wrist shot, and Travis Ramsey also scored his first to put the game away. Portland outshot St. Johns 15-9 in the third period, but could not solve Pasquale in the period. McCambridge was happy with the goalies performance. "It was a really good job by him staying in the game mentally and coming up with some big saves when we needed it."
